This rare Gope is characterized by its elongated rectangle shape and unusual decoration.
On either side, a set of alternating red and white squares frames a male figure.
The face is stylized to its simplest expression: a head, eyes and a jagged mouth.
The body part is represented by a spinal column on which the arms rest, as well as a navel and, at the bottom, the legs and sex.
For a very similar model from the collection of Dr. Goldman and Julius Carlebach, see Christie’s London 22 June 1993 lot 201.
