This magnificent bowl depicts two seabirds fighting over a fish held by the head and tail between the birds’ beaks.
The spread wings surround the bowl.
The whole is covered in black, red and turquoise-green pigment.
The bowl is part of the material and ritual culture of the Haida people. The birds naturalistically depicted here are probably loons or mallards, recognizable by the white ruff on their necks.
While most bowls and goblets from this region are fashioned from raw wood, sometimes coated with a uniform color, it’s very rare to come across a multi-colored bowl like this one.
