The harshness of the Arctic climate was a real obstacle for the people of this region. Due to the high latitude, the sun is low on the horizon for much of the year. The resulting glare was exacerbated by reflections off the snow and ice that covered the region. Without protection, the eyes were vulnerable to snow blindness, similar to sunburn at eye level. Snow goggles mitigated this effect by allowing the wearer to look through narrow openings, while protecting against excessive glare. They also offered protection against wind and snow when on the move.

These glasses were probably extracted from pergelisol.
