This ancient mask with its long, curved nose features round, pierced eyes encircled by shells and surrounded by black and blue pigments. They are dominated by superciliary arches highlighted with the same pigments. The mask is edged with a curvilinear design that extends up to the ears. It still has its horizontal wooden axle attached to the back, enabling the dancer to hold the mask, which he clenched between his teeth as he used it.
Rickett’s Blue or Berliner Waschblau, imported by the Germans in the late 19th century, was soon used as a decorative element on many of the works collected around 1900. This mask has many layers of ochre pigment, a sign of its extensive use.

The Marc & Elena Pinto collection is a true reflection of its creators and the motto that drives them “to render life’s moments through art”.
A truly international couple, Marc and Elena share diverse cultural backgrounds, a passion for travel and an inherited love of collecting fine objects. Marc’s career path was influenced by the stories his Indonesian grandfather told him about life with the Dayaks in Sandakan, northern Borneo.
In 1995, Marc left Singapore for Australia and opened his first tattoo studio in Mount Lawley, Perth. Two years later, he founded Primitive Tattoo and Piercing Studio in downtown Perth.
In parallel with their tattoo business, Marc and Elena have traveled the world, and their love of collecting has led them to an endless search for pieces that best embody a significant time or place, culture or tribe. Part of their collection, mainly Australian and Oceanic tribal art, was sold at Mossgreen in Melbourne in 2015.
