These goggles, called Igauget in Alaskan Yup’ik dialects, were sculpted to fit the face as closely as possible and to keep light to a minimum, hence the thin openings at eye level.
The width of these openings had a direct influence on the width of the field of vision. The smaller the field of vision, the greater the visual acuity.
