This superb neckrest tray, carved and engraved with a lithic tool, is decorated on the upper part with a double head at each end. They are linked by a line of carved curves, hollowed out in the middle. The underside is decorated throughout with an incised geometric motif, and ends with an ancestor’s head with a long nose and pierced septum. According to the Linden Museum inventory books, under Inv 92480, this is object 159 from collection 1437, described as follows:
“Brett einer Kopfbank (Karugum), ohne Füsse, auf der Oberseite in je 2 voreinander liegende Tierköpfe endigend, auf der Unterseite 2 Vogelköpfe mit langen Schnäbeln; plastisches Zackenornament längs der Mitte, im übrigen Flachrelief (Hauptmotiv Ovale). Länge 38 cm, grösste Breite 4 ½ cm. Origin: Tsigar“1. ___________________________________________________________________ 1- “Board of a headrest(karugum), without feet, ending on the upper side with two animal heads placed one in front of the other, on the lower side two bird heads with long beaks; lace ornamentation motif in the middle, the rest in bas-relief (oval main motif).
