Seward Peninsula
Alaska, USA
Provenance:
Collected during an excavation by a gold prospector on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska
Former collection of artist Hans Bruckner, Germany
Andrey Tischenko Collection, Helsinki, Finland
Most of the small figurines preserved in museums (see the Anchorage Museum or the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian) were discovered during excavations on St. Lawrence Island in Alaska.
They are depicted as busts with faceless heads.
Our specimen, collected on the Seward Peninsula further north, is unique in that its head is tilted slightly backward, with a clearly defined face that appears to be looking up toward the sky.
