Representing a standing figure, this statuette, known as the “welcome figure”, is a model of the large traditional Coast Salish sculptures.

They were used during a potlatch, the ceremony of feasting, exchanging gifts and redistributing wealth.

Guests arriving in a village were greeted by figures of this type, often depicted with arms outstretched or eyes wide, as if looking into the distance to watch for arrivals.

This sculpture is particularly interesting in that it demonstrates the head flattening technique practiced by the Salish people.

The earliest examples of Coast Salish art took the form of human figures regarded as ancestors.
